Weston super Mare Beach Race

Famous Rider Dougie Lampkin To Wow Crowds

For over 3 decades the Beach Race at Weston has been the maddest, baddest and biggest event in the off-road calendar.

The main racing takes place this weekend over the Saturday and Sunday and there are lots of activities through the build-up week and on Friday 9th October (today) when all the riders start arriving.

10 Things To Learn About The Beach Race

1. The very first Weston Beach Race was held in 1983 and 500 riders took part, compared to 1,500 riders this year.

2. More than 25,000 riders have tackled Weston-super-Mare’s dunes in the race’s 34-year history.

3. Riders from as far away as New Zealand, South Africa and Colombia have taken part in the event – with competitors from 40 different nations coming to Weston over the years.

4. £4million – the total value of all the bikes which will line up to compete over the weekend.

5. £35million – that’s how much has been raised by riders for charity over the years.

6.It takes 10 days to assemble the track and three days for the beach to be put back to normal.

7. Planning for next year’s event will begin on Monday.

8. One lap of the track is 7km and takes the average rider 25 minutes to complete.

9. The course is surrounded by 14km of safety barriers.

10. To create the course, 200,000 tonnes of sand is moved and shaped into huge obstacles, which involves around 55,000 man hours over the course of the weekend.
